The Harpenden and Hemel Hempstead Railway was opened in 1877. The club moved to a course at Hammonds End in 1931, and it was formed by those who wanted to remain at the Common at which time Harpenden Common GC. With a Highfield Oval site which to over 200 children was home, the National Children's Home moved to Harpenden in 1913.

Stretching from the town centre shops to the south for more than a mile, encompassing a 238 acres (96 ha) total, to the south of the centre is Harpenden Common. Today works with Countryside management and Harpenden Town Council, Harpenden Common GC has maintained a large part of the common since 1894. A tradition that began in 1946 is continued by Harpenden Lions Highland Gathering. Businessman and Chief Executive of British Land, Chris Grigg lives in Harpenden

They are involved in the District Scout Gang Show of Wheathampstead and Harpenden, a variety show, as well as taking part in a number of roles that are volunteered and marching in both the St George's and Remembrance Day parades. International clarinettist and child prodigy, Julian Bliss was born and raised in Harpenden Responsible for the Peterborough ditch incidents, Joanna Dennehy grew up in Harpenden.

Within the manor of Wheathampstead, granted in 1060 by Edward the Confessor, The village of Harpenden grew out of Westminster Abbey's gradual woodland clearing for settlement and farming. Born in Harpenden, Music Producer and DJ, Joe Lenzie attended Sir JBL One of the earliest tests that was longitudinal, the Harpenden Growth Study by James Mourilyan Tanner was overseen and, over years, monitored many of the children's development.

Worked at Rothamsted Experimental Station, research botanist, Katherine Warington 1897-1993, born in Harpenden and lived. Since 1894, Golf has been played on the Common and, with the help and a financial contribution of 5 pounds, it was at that time Harpenden GC was set up by a group of people. Played in the RC and now a commentator for major competitions such as the British Open, Ken Brown grew up and lives in Harpenden and is a member of Harpenden Common GC.
